When community members work together with trucks and ships to clean up the town's riverfront, an artist and her child hammer, chisel, weld and zap the found materials into something beautiful. Young makers will find inspiration in the playful, rhyming text and mixed media illustrations, while endnotes provide recycled-art activity ideas.
Behind the Book
Joanne grew up in northern MN among pristine woods and sparkling lakes."The Woods" were always special to her, a place to which she always returns to "recharge." Joanne is an environmental volunteer who is interested in saving the beauty of nature.
A high school classmate living in Oregon urged Joanne to visit the website, Washed Ashore: Gallery and Volunteer Workshop in Bandon, Oregon. The fascinating website led Joanne to think "out of the box." And Scrap Metal Swan was born! |
